401(k)
Employer-sponsored retirement savings plan allowing employees to contribute pre-tax or Roth (after-tax) dollars.
A 401(k) plan is an employer-sponsored retirement savings plan that allows employees to contribute a portion of their pre-tax wages to individual accounts. Employers may also make matching or profit-sharing contributions. The plan is named for the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs it.
For 2025, employees can contribute up to $23,500 to a 401(k) plan ($31,000 for those age 50 and older with catch-up contributions). Contributions and earnings grow tax-deferred until withdrawal in retirement. Roth 401(k) options allow after-tax contributions with tax-free withdrawals in retirement.
Access to a 401(k) plan is one of the most valued employee benefits. PEOs like KeyHR can provide small businesses with access to competitive 401(k) plans — including low-cost institutional investment options — that would be difficult to establish independently.
