Section 125 Plan
A cafeteria plan allowing employees to pay for certain benefits with pre-tax dollars.
A Section 125 plan, also called a cafeteria plan, is an employer-sponsored benefits plan that allows employees to pay for certain qualified benefits on a pre-tax basis, reducing their taxable income and FICA taxes.
Common benefits offered through Section 125 plans include: health insurance premiums, flexible spending accounts (FSAs), dependent care FSAs, and health savings accounts (HSAs). By paying for these benefits pre-tax, employees effectively reduce their taxable income, and employers save on their share of FICA taxes.
Section 125 plans must be established through a formal written plan document and comply with IRS nondiscrimination rules. PEOs like KeyHR can help businesses establish and administer Section 125 plans.
