FICA
Federal Insurance Contributions Act — mandates payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare.
The Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) mandates payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare. Both employees and employers pay FICA taxes.
For 2025, the Social Security tax rate is 6.2% on wages up to the wage base limit ($176,100), and the Medicare tax rate is 1.45% on all wages. Employers match these amounts, paying an additional 6.2% and 1.45% respectively. High earners pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax on wages above $200,000 (individual) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).
Self-employed individuals pay the full 15.3% (both employee and employer portions) as self-employment tax, though they can deduct half of this on their income tax return.
