FUTA
Federal Unemployment Tax Act — employer-paid tax funding unemployment benefits.
The Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) requires employers to pay a federal unemployment tax that funds the federal portion of unemployment insurance benefits. FUTA is an employer-only tax — employees do not pay FUTA.
The FUTA tax rate is 6.0% on the first $7,000 of each employee's wages per year. However, employers who pay state unemployment taxes (SUTA) on time receive a credit of up to 5.4%, reducing the effective FUTA rate to 0.6% for most employers.
FUTA taxes are deposited quarterly if the liability exceeds $500. The annual FUTA return (Form 940) is due by January 31 of the following year.
