FMLA

Family and Medical Leave Act — federal law requiring eligible employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that requires covered employers to provide eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for qualifying family and medical reasons.

Covered employers include private employers with 50 or more employees, public agencies, and public/private elementary and secondary schools. Eligible employees must have worked for the employer for at least 12 months and at least 1,250 hours during the previous 12-month period.

Qualifying reasons include the birth or adoption of a child, caring for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition, or the employee's own serious health condition. Many states have their own family and medical leave laws that provide additional protections beyond FMLA.
