EEOC

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — federal agency enforcing anti-discrimination employment laws.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is the federal agency responsible for enforcing federal laws that prohibit employment discrimination. The EEOC investigates charges of discrimination, attempts to settle disputes through mediation, and can file lawsuits on behalf of employees.

Federal laws enforced by the EEOC include Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (race, color, religion, sex, national origin), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the ADA, the Equal Pay Act, and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA).

Employers covered by EEOC laws must post notices describing federal employment discrimination laws and, in some cases, file annual EEO-1 reports. Maintaining proper documentation of employment decisions is critical for defending against EEOC charges.
