Offboarding
The formal process of managing an employee's departure from the organization.
Employee offboarding is the formal process of managing an employee's departure from an organization, whether through resignation, termination, retirement, or layoff. A structured offboarding process protects the company legally, preserves institutional knowledge, and maintains positive relationships with departing employees.
Key offboarding tasks include: conducting an exit interview, collecting company property (laptops, badges, keys), revoking system access, processing final pay in compliance with state law, providing COBRA notices, and completing required documentation.
State laws vary significantly on final pay requirements. In Florida, final wages are due on the next regular payday. Some states require immediate payment upon termination. Failure to comply with final pay laws can result in penalties.
