New Hire Reporting
Federal and state requirement to report newly hired employees to a state directory within a set timeframe.
New hire reporting is the legal requirement for employers to report newly hired or rehired employees to a state directory within a specified timeframe. New hire reporting was established by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 to help states enforce child support orders and detect unemployment insurance fraud.
Federal law requires employers to report new hires within 20 days of the hire date. Many states have shorter reporting windows. Reports must include the employee's name, address, Social Security number, date of hire, and the employer's name, address, and EIN.
In Florida, new hires must be reported within 20 days of hire. Reports can be submitted online through the Florida New Hire Reporting Center. Failure to report new hires can result in fines.
