E-Verify
Federal web-based system that verifies employment eligibility by comparing I-9 information against government records.
E-Verify is an internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) that allows employers to verify the employment eligibility of newly hired employees. E-Verify compares information from an employee's Form I-9 against federal government databases.
E-Verify is mandatory for federal contractors and subcontractors, and for employers in certain states (including Florida for public employers and state contractors). Many private employers use E-Verify voluntarily.
E-Verify is not a substitute for the I-9 process — employers must still complete I-9 forms for all new hires. E-Verify must be used after the I-9 is completed, not before. Using E-Verify before a job offer is made or before the I-9 is completed can constitute discrimination.
