W-4 Form
Employee's withholding certificate that determines federal income tax withholding.
Form W-4 (Employee's Withholding Certificate) is the IRS form that employees complete to tell their employer how much federal income tax to withhold from their paycheck. The W-4 was significantly revised in 2020 to align with changes from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
The current W-4 asks employees to provide filing status, account for multiple jobs or a working spouse, claim dependents, and make any additional withholding adjustments. Employees should complete a new W-4 whenever their tax situation changes — such as getting married, having a child, or taking on a second job.
Employers must keep completed W-4 forms on file and use the information to calculate federal income tax withholding. Employers do not submit W-4s to the IRS unless specifically requested.
