Pay Period
The recurring time frame for which employees are paid (weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly).
A pay period is the recurring length of time for which an employee's wages are calculated and paid. The most common pay periods in the United States are weekly (52 pay periods per year), bi-weekly (26 pay periods per year), semi-monthly (24 pay periods per year), and monthly (12 pay periods per year).
The choice of pay period affects cash flow, payroll processing costs, and employee satisfaction. Bi-weekly is the most common pay frequency in the U.S., used by approximately 43% of employers. Many employees prefer more frequent pay periods for budgeting purposes.
State laws may regulate minimum pay frequency requirements. Florida requires employees to be paid at least twice per month (semi-monthly), though more frequent pay is permitted.
